How to Solve Mold Release Difficulties

Release time: 2025-04-30

Mold release difficulties are a common issue in the mold production process and must be addressed. Difficult mold release can lead to product damage, reduced production efficiency, and even potential damage to the mold itself. By optimizing mold design, improving surface treatment, adjusting process parameters, and strengthening mold maintenance, mold release issues can be effectively resolved.

1. Optimize Mold Design

The rationality of mold design directly affects the mold release effect. Optimizing the design can effectively prevent mold release difficulties.

  • Increase Draft Angle: Appropriately increasing the mold draft angle is an important way to solve mold release difficulties. For plastic molds, a draft angle of 1° to 3° is recommended, while for die-casting molds, it can be increased to 2° to 5°. This helps reduce the adhesion between plastic parts and the mold, facilitating smooth mold release.

  • Proper Pin Layout: The correct layout of ejector pins helps avoid uneven force during the release process. Improper pin placement may cause product deformation or damage, and even affect smooth mold release. Therefore, the number and position of the pins should be carefully designed to ensure uniform force application for smooth mold release.

2. Improve Surface Treatment

The smoothness of the mold surface has a significant impact on mold release. The quality of surface treatment directly relates to the appearance of plastic products and the difficulty of mold release.

  • Polish the Cavity to Mirror Finish: Polishing the mold cavity to a mirror finish (Ra < 0.2μm) can effectively reduce friction between the plastic and the mold, making the release smoother. Additionally, a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating can be considered, as it has excellent wear resistance and low friction properties, significantly reducing friction during mold release.

  • Teflon Coating: For high-viscosity materials (such as TPU), a Teflon coating can be applied to the mold surface. This coating has excellent anti-stick properties and can effectively prevent adhesion between the plastic and the mold, reducing mold release difficulties.

3. Adjust Process Parameters

Adjusting injection molding or die-casting process parameters can also effectively reduce mold release difficulties.

  • Lower Injection Pressure: When injection pressure is too high, the plastic tends to stick to the mold cavity, increasing the difficulty of mold release. Properly lowering injection pressure can reduce adhesion between the plastic and the mold, improving mold release.

  • Control Mold Temperature: Mold temperature has a significant effect on mold release. The mold temperature for plastic molds should be controlled between 60-220°C. The right temperature helps promote the cooling and shrinkage of plastic, avoiding uneven cooling that could lead to mold release difficulties.

  • Use of Mold Release Agents: In some special cases, mold release agents can be used to assist in mold release. Mold release agents form a thin film on the mold surface, reducing adhesion between the plastic and the mold, helping ensure smooth mold release. However, it is important to use mold release agents properly to avoid impacting the surface of the product.

4. Strengthen Mold Maintenance

Regular mold maintenance is crucial to ensure the mold's normal use, especially in avoiding mold release difficulties.

  • Regularly Clean Mold Cavities: Residues inside the mold cavity, if not cleaned in a timely manner, may accumulate and affect the mold release effect. Therefore, regular cleaning of the mold cavity to remove any remaining plastic or impurities ensures the mold maintains good mold release performance over time.

  • Check Ejector Pins and Guide Bushings: Ejector pins and guide bushings may wear out or become stuck during use, affecting mold release. Regular inspection and timely replacement of worn parts can ensure smooth mold release during the process.

Mold release difficulties are a common issue in mold production. However, by optimizing mold design, improving surface treatment, adjusting process parameters, and strengthening mold maintenance, this problem can be effectively solved. This not only improves production efficiency but also extends the mold's service life. By implementing these systematic optimization measures, it is possible to ensure the efficient operation of molds, reduce unnecessary production downtime, and ultimately improve product quality.
